Sustainable tourism of culture and ecology
A grand event allowing the traditional wisdom and sustainable values of Indigenous peoples to be put into practice through the tourism industry.
Gathering together to promote the goodness of the world!
World Indigenous Tourism Alliance(WINTA) and Taiwan's Council of Indigenous Peoples co-hosting the 2024 World Indigenous Tourism Summit(WITS). The three-day summit will be open to tourism professionals, scholars, government representatives, and non-governmental organizations from indigenous and non-indigenous communities worldwide. With "Sustainable Tourism of Culture and Ecology" as the main topic, invites the world to collectively explore how Indigenous communities, adapting to their environments, have developed culturally diverse ways of life. They have maintained ecological balance through stewardship and norms, serving as a model for sustainable development. How can we make this traditional wisdom more widely recognized? Tourism will be practiced as a means to engage in the Indigenous way of life, managed from the Indigenous perspective. Through rich experiences and consensus with visitors on respect and protection, the well-being brought by tourism will be shared.
At this event, through professional sharing and experiential exchange in various fields, the summit aims to explore how Indigenous traditional wisdom, culture, and creativity can be used to provide on-site interpretive guidance from an Indigenous perspective and share the economic benefits brought by tourism, thus promoting the sustainable development of Indigenous tourism.

Established in March 2012, WINTA was founded by Indigenous tourism organizations from six countries including the Indigenous Tourism Association of British Columbia, Canada, Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council, Indigenous Tourism Alliance, NZ Maori Tourism, Sami Tourism, and the Trans Himalayan Environment and Livelihood Program(T-Help). As the idea was suggested by leaders of the Larrakia people, the local aboriginal people in Australia, after the establishment of the organization, they announced the "Larrakia Declaration."
WINTA is a global network organization dominated by Indigenous peoples. It aims to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples through tourism, and to establish cooperative relationships with Indigenous communities, tourism operators, governments and non-governmental organizations around the world.
Since 2018, WITS was held every two years to conduct researches on Indigenous tourism policies, experience-sharing, and to provide strategies and consultation. WITS has a sound network, which includes more than 300 members from the government, non-governmental and tourism industry. Taiwan is also a member of the WITS network. We hope to promote the flourishing development of Indigenous tourism through international dialogues and collaborations in the future.
