SAN(橋本仁・福田基・柳澤由香莉)

The "Showacho Art Festival" is an art event where young artists from Taiwan and Japan present their works in the existing Japanese-style architecture of "Showacho," a district dating back to the Japanese colonial period. The goal is to allow viewers to experience contemporary Taiwan and the deeply rooted memories within its history through artistic expression. The festival is intended to be held annually, with plans to gradually expand its scale and become a platform for artistic exchange between Taiwan and Japan. The first edition, Vol. 1, was staged at the historic "Dayuanzi" building, which was constructed during the Japanese era. Three groups of artists, consisting of five individuals in total, will present works centered around the theme of Showacho, each offering a unique perspective.

"Japanese Architecture in Taiwan: Preserving Memories of Land and Buildings Through Art"

Japanese architecture in Taiwan broadly refers to the structures built during the 50 years of Japanese rule. More specifically, it describes modern buildings of Western, Japanese, or blended styles from that period, shaped by Japanese design and techniques. Recently, the reevaluation, preservation, and renewal of these architectural pieces have gained momentum. Daiyuanzi, now an art gallery, is a prime example of this revitalization movement.

The Showa Town Art Festival celebrates Japanese-style buildings in the Showa Town area, turning them into stages for art. In the inaugural Vol. 1, three artist groups will transform the memories of Dayuanzi into art.

For this lecture, we welcome Mr. Yoshitaka Watanabe, author of 《台灣日式建築紀行》Japanese Architecture Journey in Taiwan, who is dedicated to sketching and documenting these Japanese-era buildings; Ms. Lin,Pei-Ying from the Kaohsiung 打狗文史再興會社, who focuses on the renewal of Japanese architecture and organizes events like the Hamasen Street Vendors’ Festival and cultural tours; artist Mr. Wuhan CHOU, participating in the Showacho Art Festival; and OSER (Jin Hashimoto and Yukari Yanagisawa), the festival organizers, for a panel discussion.

Artists

周武翰 Wuhan CHOU

Graduated from the Department of Advertising at National Chengchi University, the Interior Design program at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, and the Architecture Research Institute at London Metropolitan University, Zhou Wu-Han is now an artist based in Taichung.

His work focuses on the disappearing buildings and ruins in cities, extensively seeking connections between historical maps and the current urban landscape. Through experimental creations, he explores the continuity of historical memories from the Japanese colonial period and their impact on contemporary Taiwan. Zhou's creative process draws from architectural design methods and language, starting with spatial surveying to layer images and develop installation spaces and performance art. In recent years, he has collaborated with Jin Hashimoto, using his family’s history in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial era as a subject for joint research and artistic projects.

Wakako GOMI

Born in 1984 in Bangkok.
Graduated from the Department of Photography, College of Art, Nihon University.
Previously worked in the Photography Department of the Tokyo Zoological Park Society, and now resides in Taiwan.

Fifteen years ago, she first encountered Taiwan's indigenous people, and her soul was deeply moved and inspired. Since then, she has been profoundly attracted to their culture.
In order to better understand and document Taiwan's indigenous culture, she decided to move to Taiwan.

She continues to follow in the footsteps of Taiwan's indigenous people, photographing works that focus on their culture. She has received the Photography Merit Award and Honorable Mention in the 8th "MAKAPAH Art Award" organized by the Council of Indigenous Peoples in Taiwan, as well as an Honorable Mention in the 9th edition of the same award.

SAN(Jin HASHIMOTO, Hajime FUKUDA, Yukari YANAGISAWA)

The art collective "SAN" consists of contemporary visual artist Jin HASHIMOTO, composer and sound environment designer Hajime FUKUDA, who is based in Berlin and Hokkaido, and art producer/trilingual art coordinator Yukari YANAGISAWA. The group was officially established in 2024 after a chance encounter in Osaka in 2023, and they are confirmed to participate in the Nakanojo Biennale in 2025.

The name of the group, "SAN (3)," represents the trinity of soul, spirit, and body, a number that has been considered a significant symbol throughout human history. In modern times, we are often influenced by dualistic concepts such as "good and evil" or "positive and negative." However, the name "SAN" emphasizes the importance of balance in Eastern philosophy, particularly the "middle way," and conveys a concept that transcends dualism. Through Fukuda's music, which captures the energy of spaces, and Hashimoto's visual creations, the group presents unique and innovative live performances.
