Repack

Xinfu Market Plastic Challenge: Designers from Taiwan and Japan took on the task of creating eco-friendly packaging prototypes in this project. The setting for the task was the food container design at Xinfu Market in Taipei.

▧ Repack

Taiwan-Japan Project: Smart Packaging & Sustainable Living Ideas

Repack Project Sharing Event in Taipei

There's been a global rise in disposable food packaging waste due to the pandemic that has caused concern. REnato lab and Re:public came up with the "Repack Research & Design Project" in response to this. It's a two-year project (2021-2023) involving visits to places like Taipei, Fukuoka, Yame City, and Ohamacho. The goal was to study people's lives and their use of disposable packaging waste. This led to creating various ideas for living well without disposable packaging.

In March 2024, public sharing events will take place in Tokyo and Taipei. At the Taipei event, we'll mix ideas from Taiwan and Japan, city and country life, and explore the possibility of "how sustainable living works in real world " with the audience.

▧ About the Repack Research & Design Project

"Repack" is a two-year project (2021-2023) between Japan and Taiwan. It focuses on the rise in disposable packaging waste worldwide because of changes in hygiene practices due to the pandemic. The project looks into food packaging and circular systems centered around people.

During the project's first phase (2021-2022), interviews were done with 15 mothers with children in Taipei City, Taitung City, Tokyo, and Satsuma Sendai City in Kagoshima. The project discovered that family habits, family-community connections, and personal hygiene practices all affect how food packaging is used and thrown away.

In the second phase (2023), 13 designers from Japan and Taiwan took the ideas of "food packaging" and "how to make recycling a part of life" and did a 6-day study. They visited Yame City in Fukuoka and Unzen City Ohamacho in Nagasaki. The designers then made designs and prototypes based on what they learned from observing circular lifestyles.
