角 — 2022年寶藏巖第四季駐村計畫 Between Two Unparallel Lines — Treasure Hill Artist Village 2022 Season 4 Residency Exhibition
◢ 展覽論述 Exhibition Introduction ◣
寶藏巖國際藝術村每年接待來自世界各地的創作者、策展人與研究者,促進臺北與不同地區的藝文社群產生連結,交織與累積豐富且多元的創作能量。2022年10月臺灣政府鬆綁防疫政策,重啟後疫情時代國際交流的各種可能,寶藏巖第四季駐村計畫展覽邀請六位國外駐村藝術家,從他們自身文化與生活的觀察,以及在寶藏巖駐村的探索與創作,回應臺灣甚至跨國的當代社會議題,如同在歐幾里得幾何學中,「角」是由兩條不平行的線彼此交會時所構成的空間,從零至三百六十度,或正或負,呼應著群體與事件中不同角色與視角的彼此碰撞下,可能存在著更寬廣的理解方式。
黑田惠枝收集寶藏巖居民的二手衣物,縫製一隻隻擁有著像是動物又如人類四肢的虛構玩偶「Mokemokemono」,在不確定的形態中,反映著寶藏巖過去到現在的生活記憶,間接思考自我的存在。車昕蔚透過觸摸臺灣的陶土來理解寶藏巖的地理特質,並製作陶器皿觀察其與環境、藥草所產生的改變,視覺化時間的概念,反思在快步調的資本主義社會下,人類看待土地與時間的方式。
另一方面,鈴木英倫子(Suzueri)延續過往的聲響實驗創作,並在此次展覽中使用從臺灣採集而來的二手物品與坊間流傳的鬼怪奇談,製作光影裝置討論虛與實之間的關係,挑戰對於文化或物品的既有認知。太田遼走訪臺灣的大街小巷,發現為了防盜而加裝的「鐵窗」時常無聲無息地延伸成為私人住宅空間的一部份,進而嘗試翻轉室外與室內觀看鐵窗的視角,探索鐵窗在私與公領域的模糊狀態與界線。
從臺海的緊繃關係到烏俄戰爭,卡米爾.布魯.瓦倫丁觀察到全球正在面對的政治角力及暴力威脅,以抗爭運動和軍事遊行中常使用到的煙霧與煙火進行創作,描繪其中脆弱的和平以及潛藏在集體的聲音。伊曼紐爾・戴諾第運用攝影、多頻道錄像與VR裝置,從神話、科幻、哲學、量子力學以及當代社會中,搓揉奇幻世界的想像與反烏托邦的論述,思考現實、虛擬與超現實之間的邊界。
「角」展覽藉由駐村藝術家各自的創作,尋找在看似侷限的空間裡存在著的不同可能性,無論是生命與記憶的存與未存之間,分針與秒針的過去與未來之間,政治斡旋的黑與白之間,影像的現實與虛構之間,試圖在二元價值觀的兩端 ── 善/惡、快/慢、男/女、文明/野蠻、自由/專制 ── 找尋一個安身的角落、角色與觀看的角度。
Each year, Treasure Hill Artist Village welcomes creatives, curators, and researchers from all over the world to encourage Taipei to interact with culture and art groups from different places, building and accumulating rich and multivariate creative energy. The loosening of border controls in October 2022 has opened us up to international exchange in the post-pandemic age. For the fourth season of the Treasure Hill Artist Village residency exhibition, we have invited six international artists to respond to issues in contemporary society both in Taiwan and the world from the perspectives of their own cultures and everyday observations, as well as the explorations during their residencies in Treasure Hill. In Euclid’s geometry, an “angle” is the space created when two unparallel lines merge, varying from 0 to 360 degrees, either above or below zero degrees, reflecting the possibilities of mutual understandings that exist amid the clash between different roles and perspectives in groups or incidents.
Yoshie Kuroda collects second-hand clothing from the residents of Treasure Hill to make fictional dolls called “Mokemokemono” that has both animal and human characteristics. The ambiguous form of the “Mokemokemono” alludes to the memories of Treasure Hill, from past to present, and further encourages contemplation on the existence of the self. Xinwei Che gains a further understanding of the geographical traits of Treasure Hill by touching the clay of Taiwan, which is then used to create pottery ware to observe the changes that occur in its interactions with the surroundings and medicinal herbs. By visualizing the concept of time, the work reflects upon how human beings view the land and time amid the fast paces of Capitalism.
As a continuation of past sound experiments, Elico Suzuki(Suzueri) uses the secondhand objects she collected in Taiwan and strange folk tales of ghosts to create a light installation that explores the relationship between the virtual and reality, challenging existing understandings of culture or objects. Haruka Ohta traveled the streets and alleys of Taiwan and discovered that the metal window grills installed for security reasons have quietly become an extension of private spaces. The artist overturns how metal window grills are viewed from the interior and exterior of buildings to explore the blurry areas and boundaries between private and public spaces.
From the tension between Taiwan and China to the Russo-Ukrainian War, Camille Bleu-Valentin observes that the entire world is threatened by political power struggles and violence. The artist created the work with smoke bombs and fireworks, often seen in resistance movements and military parades, depicting the vulnerability of peace and the voices hidden in the collective. Emanuele Dainotti uses photography, multichannel videos, and VR installations and integrates imaginations of fantastical worlds and dystopian discourse in mythology, sci-fi, philosophy, quantum mechanics, and contemporary society to reflect on the line between reality, the virtual world, and the surreal.
Through the works of different resident artists, the exhibition “Between Two Unparallel Lines” searches for possibilities in spaces that seem limited, either in the existence and inexistence of life and memories, the past and future of the minute and second hand, the black and white of political mediations, and the reality and the virtual in images, attempting to find a resting place, position, and perspective amid dualistic values: good/evil, fast/slow, man/woman, civilization/barbarism, and freedom/ autocracy.
