What happens after the headlines fade?

Event Description
For our 10th edition of Tipsy Talks, we're showing an early edit screening of Beyond the Headlines (雨後,光復), a work-in-progress short documentary exploring recovery, resilience, and the human stories behind disaster reporting.
Set in Guangfu Township, Hualien, the film follows local residents and business owners as they rebuild their lives in the aftermath of recent disasters. While the 2024 Hualien earthquake and the 2025 floods brought significant media attention to the region, this documentary focuses on a quieter, less visible challenge: restoring confidence, attracting visitors back, and rebuilding livelihoods once the cameras have gone.
Directed by Taipei-based independent researcher and journalist Laura Bonsaver, the film offers an intimate perspective on a community determined not to be defined solely by disaster. Through conversations with guesthouse owners, small business operators, and local residents, Beyond the Headlines asks an important question:
How can communities recover not only physically, but socially and economically, after a crisis?
Following the screening, Laura will join us for a discussion on documentary storytelling, disaster narratives, community resilience, and the process of creating her first independent documentary.
