Unfolding Circuits: 1st Tainan Art Biennale 2026 Opening Forum : Dialogues Between Contemporary Art, Cities, and Communities
What happens when art steps beyond the museum and into the city? What new possibilities emerge when art meets architecture, communities, and everyday life?
The 2026 Tainan Art Biennale transforms the city into a stage for artistic exploration, bringing together artists, architects, curators, and cultural practitioners from around the world. Through an international forum, participants will rethink how art can engage with urban spaces, connect communities, and open up new possibilities for dialogue and co-creation across cultures and lived experiences.
The opening international forum begins with a keynote speech, “Between Nature and Architecture,” featuring Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, who will share his perspectives on architecture and urban space. The forum will continue with three panel discussions: “Social Engagement and the Contemporary Art World,” “Museums and Urban Community Ecological Networks,” and “Art Publishing and the Art Community in the City.” Together, these sessions will explore how art institutions can build meaningful connections with urban communities, how art can engage with society, and how cultural initiatives can take root and continue to evolve within the city.
Bringing together voices from Japan, Australia, Vietnam, and Taiwan, the forum features an international lineup of architects, artists, curators, and cultural practitioners. Speakers include Sou Fujimoto, Founder of Sou Fujimoto Architects; Yukie Kamiya, Chief Curator of The National Art Center, Tokyo; Theo Costantino, Director of Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at The University of Western Australia; Lee Kinsella, Chief Curator of Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery; and Vietnamese artist Tuan Mami. Drawing on diverse international perspectives, they will share their experiences of artistic practice and explore the connections between art, cities, communities, and cultural ecosystems.
We warmly invite everyone interested in contemporary art, architecture, urban culture, and community development to join this cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas. Together, let us explore how art can move beyond exhibition spaces and become a vital force connecting cities, communities, and everyday life.
