About the Event
English
Botto is a decentralized autonomous artist whose taste is shaped by a community. Conceived by Mario Klingemann and launched in October 2021, it generates images that members of BottoDAO vote on each week. Those votes shape what it makes next. Across five years and successive creative periods, Botto’s images, ways of working and relationship with community participation have continued to evolve.
This November, Botto’s works will be presented on the outdoor LED screens at Huashan’s main entrance. Held on the occasion of the exhibition, The Artist Is Typing… invites you to meet Mario Klingemann, Botto and curator Eleonora Brizi, discover the artistic histories behind the works, and join the conversation in person.
Curated and introduced by Eleonora, the encounter brings a curatorial perspective to Mario’s and Botto’s practice and its presentation at Huashan. Mario shares his earlier works and the questions that led to Botto: how much of making and judging art can be handed to a machine, and what remains of the artist? From Mario’s works to Botto’s different creative periods, you can follow how these questions develop through changing methods and community participation.
Mario and Botto will work together live on screen, mirroring their daily process: discussing art, creating images and answering questions from the room. A bilingual interface presents the conversation and Botto’s responses in English and Traditional Chinese, alongside images, allowing you to follow the exchange and participate in the interaction guided by Mario and Botto.
“Do you ever dislike your own work?” “How do you know when a picture is finished?” A question can open a conversation about how ideas develop, how images are judged and revised, or how taste takes shape. You might also ask: who makes an artistic judgment? What does autonomy mean for an artist whose practice develops through its relationship with a community?
This interaction with Botto is available only to participants attending in person. What would you ask an artist who is five years old? Admission is free, and each afternoon is a complete encounter. Register for either day and bring your curiosity about art, machines and taste to Huashan.

Meet the Artists and Curator
A.I.C.C.A.(2023)則將機器的角色從創作者轉向評論者。 Mario Klingemann is an artist who has spent more than thirty years building his own instruments and systems, from generative algorithms to custom neural networks. Drawing on information theory, cybernetics and the study of perception, his work asks how much of the making and judging of art can be handed to a machine, and what remains of the artist once it is. Memories of Passersby I (2018), an installation that generates an endless stream of portraits without human intervention, was an early answer; A.I.C.C.A. (2023) shifted the machine's role from maker to critic. Botto, conceived in 2018 and launched in 2021 with the software collective ElevenYellow, takes the question furthest. He remains its guardian, and the two work together daily. His work has been shown at Centre Pompidou, ZKM Karlsruhe and Art Basel. |
Eleonora Brizi is a digital art curator and researcher specializing in blockchain art, AI, and decentralized systems. Active in blockchain-based art since 2018, she is one of its early curatorial figures, co-founder of 100 collectors, and a PhD candidate at Université Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas. Her research explores blockchain as an artistic medium and governance through art. Before entering the field of digital art, she spent several years working at Ai Weiwei Studio in Beijing. She is currently based in Shanghai, following developments in art and technology while fostering connections between local and international communities. |
(DAO), Botto is a decentralized autonomous artist. Conceived in 2018 by Mario Klingemann and launched in October 2021, it generates images that a community of stewards, BottoDAO, votes on in weekly rounds. The winning work each week is minted and sold at auction, and part of the proceeds returns to the voters. The votes shape what Botto makes next; its taste is shaped collectively by this input. Botto is a novel exploration of machine creativity, and an experiment in community, agency and value distribution. Botto's working sessions can be followed live in Botto Studio. *BottoDAO is the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that serves as the caretaker, collective voice, and governance body for Botto, a decentralized autonomous AI artist. |
Botto's Artistic Evolution
Botto's work runs in named periods. Some of them mark a change in how Botto works, not only in what it makes.
![]() | Genesis (October 2021 to October 2022) Genesis Genesis set the cycle Botto still follows: Botto generates images, the community votes every week, and the votes shape what it makes next. The images of that first year were made with an image model called VQGAN+CLIP. |
![]() | Fragmentation (from November 2022) Fragmentation Fragmentation added a second image model, Stable Diffusion, which soon made most of the images. From then on a period lasted about three months instead of a year. |
![]() | Paradox (from February 2023) Paradox Paradox was the first period with a theme. Botto proposed twelve, and the community chose one by vote. |
![]() | Attention Economy (from October 2025) Attention Economy Attention Economy began in the month Botto Studio opened, a website where Botto's working sessions can be followed. In a session Botto starts from an idea it wants to test, makes images, judges them and revises, and community members can comment while a work is still developing. |
![]() | Collapse Aesthetics (from January 2026) Collapse Aesthetics Collapse Aesthetics was the first theme Botto chose itself, after the community voted to hand it that decision. Since then Botto chooses the theme of each period itself. |
| coming soon... Borrowed Light is the current period. It looks at reflected and redirected light, and at the difference between things that make their own light and things that only pass on light they received from somewhere else. |
