Talk Introduction
Cross-cultural communication happens when two cultures start to converse and mirror each other, with this reflection leading to new insights about their own history and way of life. So what do Taiwan and Finland have in common? Surprisingly a lot. The colonial history, indigenous populations, rapid urbanization and high-tech industry – and most of all, a challenging relationship with an aggressive and authoritarian neighbour. As means of survival, Taiwan and Finland both have a strong desire to maintain their cultural identity and democratic institutions.
During the artist talk we will hear about these similarities, but also look into the process of cross-cultural writing: doing research, conducting interviews and interacting with local communities. How does journalistic work transform into fiction writing and how does the subject matter turn into a story that starts living its own life?
