Event Introduction

What a mother’s purse and container collection can teach us about storytelling, inheritance, and motherhood

Writer Brenda Lin grew up surrounded by her mother’s handmade collection of children’s textiles, from baby carriers, tiny shoes, hats, and bibs to a special sub-collection of purses and containers.

While helping her mother organise and write about this deeply personal collection, Brenda began to see the quiet connection between text and textiles. This reflection would eventually become a central metaphor in her new book, Unraveling Threads: Essays on Inheritance.

For this Tipsy Talks session, Brenda will share an essay from the book and explore a tender question: Why do humans gather, hold, and contain the things they love? If love itself could take the shape of a container, what might it look like?

Drawing from Ursula K. Le Guin’s “carrier bag theory of fiction,” Brenda reflects on the stories mothers carry within the intimate spaces of the heart, and how objects, memories, and care are passed down through generations.

Join us for an intimate evening of literature, motherhood, memory, and conversation at The Library Bar. Book signing with Brenda will follow the talk.
