Artist Cam Smith spent years inside Silicon Valley's tech industry. Through surveillance footage and deepfake art, he came to see that the AI wave sweeping the globe carries a whole ideology of power, surveillance, and "accelerationism" — quietly shaping how we imagine the future.
At LTUX Taipei's monthly meet-up special edition, this talk traces his path of thinking, from the history of science to dystopian fiction to his own art, pulling back the curtain on the power logic behind the AI hype. While everyone's selling a quick fix to "keep up," maybe the better question is: who's defining this anxiety, and who's profiting from it?
About
From street photography to surveillance footage, from deepfake art to the true story of a security robot that drowned itself in a fountain — artist Cam Smith spent years inside the tech industry in Silicon Valley. What he found was that the AI wave sweeping the globe carries with it a whole ideology built around power, surveillance, and "accelerationism" — one that's quietly shaping how we imagine the future.
This talk takes you through his own path of thinking in the first person, from the history of science and dystopian fiction to his own deepfake art practice, pulling back the curtain on the power logic — and violence — behind the AI hype. While everyone's selling a quick fix to "keep up with AI," maybe the better question is: who's defining this anxiety, and who's profiting from it?
Who this is for: Designers and creatives feeling anxious, or just curious about the AI wave; anyone interested in the politics of technology; and anyone who wants to understand AI through an art and humanities lens instead of a hype cycle.
