The film follows Sam and Jonathan, two traveling salesmen who make a living selling novelty gag toys. As they go door to door, they guide the audience through a series of encounters across different places and characters. Through a seemingly loose structure, the film weaves together a range of absurd vignettes, forming a mosaic-like observation of human nature, loneliness, and emotional disconnection.
As the final installment of director Roy Andersson’s “Living Trilogy,” the film is composed of 39 static shots and scenes, each resembling a still painting that quietly observes human life. Through its non-linear narrative, it reflects on the absurdity of human existence, blending austere visuals with dark humor to create a detached yet poetic cinematic style.

Roy Andersson is a Swedish filmmaker and a key figure in contemporary European auteur cinema. He is known for his highly stylized visual language and his exploration of the absurdity of human existence within social contexts. His work is characterized by static camera setups, theatrical set design, desaturated color palettes, and depersonalized performances, emphasizing meaning constructed through composition and ensemble staging.
