Talk Introduction
LEE Ah-Young developed three reference atlases prior to conducting research on contemporary art at THAV. The first atlas, comprising two novels and three films, examined 20th-century Taiwanese history—including colonial rule, war, authoritarian regimes, industrialization, and democratization—through the lens of individual lives, death, and family. It also offered an expansive reflection on Asian modernity, mediated by entities such as "ghosts," which are absent yet present. The second atlas highlighted Taiwan's geopolitical, cultural, climatic, and socio-political characteristics as an anchoring point for reimagining Asia, functioning as a reflective network exploring new narratives in contemporary Asian art. The third atlas focused on key exhibitions and research of 1960–70s Korean Experimental art, serving as a reference map and a "mirror" for Taiwanese complex art, with the aim of collecting relevant references during the residency.
Methodologically, the project reconfigured avant-garde approaches shared by both art scenes, including the blurring of life and art, interventions in everyday life, and critical engagement with recording practices. It examined the boundaries between private diaries and research logs, as well as hierarchies across media, through iterative research logs, interviews, site visits, and glossary creation.
Framing the research process itself as a performative and archival practice, the project seeks to construct new narratives connecting Korean experimental art and Taiwanese complex art. During the event, research processes and outcomes will be shared with participants, who will receive a research report combining image atlases, annotated references (including bibliographic and archival materials), and experimental writing, creating a platform for active dialogue.
