Generative facilitation for navigating complexity, emergence, and interconnectedness in teams and organisations
Increasingly, the context of facilitation is not merely a linear progression of steps and processes that guide conversations from divergence to convergence. In the real world, the challenges of work and the dynamics of interactions are of a complex adaptive nature. Like a flock of birds moving in the sky, we see changing patterns of formation, while we cannot see the invisible hands seemingly orchestrating the flock or the flow. Increasingly, the facilitator needs to address the underlying systemic structure driving the group's behaviours and situation. Symbiotically, a generative facilitator can help people see the whole and the parts, the differentiation and interconnectedness, the points and views. This stance is for dialogue facilitators, leaders and anyone who needs to guide conversations: act as a container - use of self (presence), of group and of emergence to help people surface the web of thoughts, emotions and interconnections, mental models and the missing patterns over time during the conversations.
