In Indigenous cultures, weaving is more than a skill—it is a symbolic link to family, tradition, and identity.
This year, the Ketagalan Culture Center’s international cultural exchange focuses on “Austronesian cultures” and “cultural transmission,” bringing together Ifugao weavers from the Philippines and Atayal weavers from Nanao, Taiwan. Through textiles as a shared language, they will explore how ancestral knowledge is passed on and reimagined in response to today’s world, highlighting enduring ties across island communities.
The Ifugao, an Indigenous group from the northern mountains of Luzon, share deep historical and cultural connections with Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples. Their textiles—famous for vivid colors and complex patterns—reflect social status and communal identity. In recent years, Ifugao and Taiwanese Indigenous communities have actively exchanged experiences in weaving, clothing, and agriculture.
Also participating are Atayal weavers from Nanao, known for textiles rich in spiritual meaning and ancestral storytelling. A new generation is now blending traditional techniques with modern design, bridging heritage and contemporary life.
We welcome all who are interested in Austronesian Indigenous cultures and textile arts to join this rare opportunity for cross-cultural sharing and demonstration.
