Lecture Topic: The Power of Circular Dreams: Eco Sathi’s Journey from the Global South
Speaker: Dr. Manu Karki, founder of Eco Sathi Nepal, is a dentist-turned sustainability leader advocating plastic reduction, circular products, and community-driven change across South Asia.
What happens when a dentist sets aside her instruments to confront plastic pollution and environmental degradation? For Dr. Manu Karki from Nepal, the transition “from clinic to climate” led to the founding of Eco Sathi Nepal, transforming her from a healthcare professional into a pioneer of circular economy practices in South Asia.
Since its establishment in 2020, Eco Sathi has focused on reducing single-use plastics, promoting upcycled and biodegradable alternatives, and embedding circular living into everyday life. Through initiatives such as the Bring Your Own Mug campaign, research on sustainable menstrual products, and community tree-planting programs, Eco Sathi has created ripple effects beyond borders. To date, the organization has helped retrieve 15,000 kilograms of ocean plastic and established partnerships with collaborators in the UK, Japan, and across the Asia-Pacific.
This session will share both Dr. Karki’s personal transformation and insights from a recent scoping study on Nepal’s circular economy. It will highlight:
