The Berkeley Club of Taiwan is honored to invite you to the ANNUAL DINNER 2025: BEARS WITHOUT BORDERS.
In Taiwan, the Club embodies the Berkeley spirit by serving as a home for alumni, a welcoming gateway for visiting faculty and students, and a vital liaison linking CAL with the broader community.
On Saturday, November 8, 2025, we will gather at the Grand Hilai Taipei to celebrate Berkeley’s tradition of excellence, innovation, and global engagement. We are privileged to welcome back Chancellor Richard Lyons, along with distinguished deans and special guests from Berkeley, for an evening that reflects the strength and reach of our community.
We look forward to seeing you there — Go Bears!

Rich Lyons is the 12th Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, and is the first undergraduate alum to serve as Chancellor, receiving his BS degree from Berkeley in 1982. He joined the Berkeley faculty in 1993 after earning his PhD in Economics from MIT and following six years on the faculty at Columbia University.
Lyons’ pioneering work as a scholar focuses on how information within a society is aggregated and expressed in price signals, which in turn helps societies to make better decisions. Lyons is also known for culture leadership – anchoring institutions on distinctive values that help create a cohesive community with a shared understanding of, and support for, the mission. He is a powerful advocate for public higher education that is both accessible and excellent.
About Interim Dean Mark Asta
Mark Asta, a “triple bear” with B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Berkeley, is a leading expert in computational materials science. After beginning his career at Sandia National Laboratories, he held faculty positions at Northwestern and UC Davis before joining Berkeley’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
As the Arthur C. and Phyllis G. Oppenheimer Distinguished Professor, Asta applies computational and machine learning techniques to design materials that endure extreme conditions for energy and structural applications. He has served as MSE chair (2012–17), director of the Materials Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2018–22), and executive associate dean of Berkeley Engineering (2023–24), where he led initiatives in space engineering, sustainability, and experiential learning.
Asta is a fellow of both TMS and the American Physical Society, recipient of the TMS William Hume-Rothery Award and the MRS David Turnbull Lectureship Award. Author of over 330 papers, he also advises national labs including PNNL and LLNL. His term as interim dean begins July 1, 2025.
