In 2022, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) revised its official museum definition, for the first time explicitly identifying inclusivity and diversity as core values. The new definition emphasizes that museums are not only spaces for education and enjoyment, but also places for reflection and knowledge sharing. This highlights the responsibility of museums to actively incorporate histories and experiences that have long been marginalized, allowing more diverse communities—particularly women and gender minorities—to see their own life experiences and cultural identities represented.

Globally, not only have women-centered museums been established, but many museums and art institutions have also begun to re-examine their collections, uncovering gender-related stories and contexts. Through exhibitions, research, and educational programs, they are advancing the promotion and discussion of gender issues.

To foster dialogue and collaboration between Taiwan and the international museum community, the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is hosting the 2025 International Webinar on Gender Equality in Museums, with the theme “Voicing Women · Reframing the Museum: Women’s Narratives in and beyond Museums.” The webinar invites experts and scholars from different countries to share their practices and strategies for presenting women’s and gender-diverse narratives in museums, and to exchange perspectives with museum professionals, researchers, and the public in Taiwan.

This lecture features Marion Anker and Laurien van der Werff, co-chairs of the Women of the Rijksmuseum Project and Research Associate, who will discuss how research, exhibitions, and educational outreach can be used to reinterpret female figures and gender representations within the collection, and how to advance gender perspectives within the framework of a national museum. In addition, Vivian Wenli Lin, co-founder of Voices of Women Media, will introduce how participatory media can be employed to foster women’s community storytelling and amplify diverse voices in exhibitions, while also sharing case studies and experiences of collaborating with different communities.

*The webinar will be conducted with simultaneous interpretation in both Mandarin and English.
*The webinar will be held via Webex, and a meeting link and password will be sent to registered participants via email. Please be sure to check your inbox.
