活動簡介

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has ushered in a new era in education, presenting both opportunities and challenges for English Language Teaching (ELT). As AI technologies such as natural language processing, machine learning, and chatbots continue to evolve, they are reshaping the landscape of English language learning and instruction in profound ways. In response to these rapid changes, scholars and practitioners are exploring the multifaceted relationship between ELT and AI, examining AI’s potential to enhance language learning experiences and ELT practices.

Despite the promise of AI, its integration into ELT raises significant pedagogical and ethical concerns. Chief among these are issues such as the accuracy of AI-generated feedback, students’ over-reliance on AI tools, and plagiarism in writing, all of which need to be critically examined to ensure positive learning outcomes in this evolving educational landscape. Additionally, the impact of AI technologies on teaching also requires teachers to develop new competencies and adapt their pedagogical strategies to effectively leverage these tools. This shift also raises questions about the changing role of language teachers and the skills they need to develop to work effectively alongside AI systems.

In light of these opportunities and challenges, the principal theme of this conference is ‘Rethinking ELT in the Age of AI.’ We welcome submissions of research that appreciate and examine issues related to AI practices in the ESL/EFL context. Our aim is to foster a comprehensive dialogue on this topic, covering a wide range of sub-themes, including but not limited to:

  • Teaching and learning four language skills using AI
  • Vocabulary and grammar instruction using AI
  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
  • English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
  • English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI)
  • Bilingual and multilingual education
  • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
  • Innovative teaching methods incorporating AI
  • Technology-enhanced instruction and AI-driven language learning applications
  • Curriculum development, lesson planning, and materials development
  • Language assessment and testing
  • Teacher education and professional development
  • Students’ individual differences
  • Ethical considerations in using AI for English language teaching and learning
  • Multiliteracies and translanguaging
  • Corpus linguistics
