Event Introduction
The "2025 Taoyuan International Art Award" (hereinafter referred to as "Taoyuan Award"), organized by the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts (hereinafter referred to as "TMoFA"), is an open call for new creative proposals worldwide, with no restrictions on medium. The award aims to encourage diverse artistic development, nurture contemporary artists, and strengthen international exchanges to align with the global art scene. Now in its third edition, the Taoyuan Award follows a biennial model, with open calls in one year and exhibitions in the next. A five-month international media strategy was implemented to attract a wide range of creators. After the preliminary selection in June 2024, 11 works were shortlisted for the exhibition and award competition. For exhibition details and event schedules, please refer to TMoFA's official website.
This year's selected artists range from their early 20s to late 40s, with six of the eleven selected projects being group collaborations. These groups not only include visual artists but also professionals from film, traditional boxing, and sociology, reflecting a growing trend of interdisciplinary collaboration in the international art scene. The exhibited works address geopolitical issues, contemporary media reflections, and explorations of human and non-human relationships. They are grounded in long-term field research, civic engagement, dynamic imagery, interactive technology, and site-specific production, responding to various contemporary social conditions while interweaving cultural landscapes.
Alongside the exhibition, TMoFA has organized the international forum "Collaboration as a Method: Trends in Contemporary Artistic Communities." This forum will explore the collaborative nature of this year's selected artists and teams, focusing on the rise of cross-disciplinary and community-based artistic practices. Moderated by Jiarong Yeh, Director of Hong-gah Museum, the discussion will feature Abby Chen, Reuben Keehan, and Pei-Yi Lu, who will examine the evolving landscape of artistic collaboration, the dynamics between artists, participants, and audiences, and the role of museums in this shifting paradigm.
As a long-term international exchange platform preceding the official completion of TMoFA's main building, the Taoyuan Award plays a crucial role in fostering artistic dialogue and exchange, aligning with the museum's global vision. Beyond the exhibition, cultural visits, international forums, and networking initiatives provide greater exposure for Taiwanese and international artists, facilitating conversations among artists, curators, and institutional leaders worldwide.
