Join us for an exclusive event hosted by the Berkeley Club of Taiwan, co-sponsored by CAPRI: Berkeley Salon: Conversations with Dean Orville Schell on Sunday, September 1, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Regent Hotel's Reading Room, Taipei.

As U.S.-China relations face increasing turbulence, this is a timely chance to hear from Orville Schell, a leading China scholar and former Dean of Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. Now the Arthur Ross Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society, Dean Schell offers deep insights into this crucial global dynamic.

This event also marks the launch of the Chinese translation of his acclaimed novel, My Old Home: A Novel of Exile 故鄉:一個流放者的故事. You will have the chance to engage with Dean Schell during a discussion and book signing.

About Orville Schell

Orville Schell photo

Schell is the Arthur Ross Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at Asia Society in New York. He is a former professor and dean at Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. Schell was born in New York City, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in Far Eastern History, was an exchange student at National Taiwan University in the 1960s, and earned a Ph.D. (Abd) in Chinese History from Cal. He worked for the Ford Foundation in Indonesia, covered the war in Indochina as a journalist, and has traveled widely in China since the mid-70s. Schell is the author of 15 books, 10 of them about China, and a contributor to numerous edited volumes. He has written widely for many magazines and newspapers, including The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, and the Los Angeles Times. He is a Fellow at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University, a Senior Fellow at the Annenberg School of Communications at USC, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Schell is also the recipient of many prizes and fellowships including a Guggenheim Fellowship.
