1. Introduction to the Event:
The Science Bubble Tea is back for its seventh and most glamorous edition yet, dedicated to the most precious of subjects: diamonds. To delve into the pivotal role this gemstone plays across a wide array of scientific fields, we're joined by a new duo of experts whose long-standing joint work is a jewel of Franco-Taiwanese scientific collaboration: Jean-François Roch (ENS Paris-Saclay) and Huan-Cheng Chang (Academia Sinica).
2. The Significance of Diamond Research:
Diamonds captivate us with their brilliance and are treasured worldwide. But beyond their allure, diamonds are a cornerstone in scientific research, leading to numerous technological breakthroughs. From synthesizing diamonds with unmatched precision to pioneering applications in fields ranging from biology and metrology to quantum computing and environmental science, diamond research is unlocking a realm of possibilities that extend far beyond their ornamental value.
Huan-Cheng Chang and Jean-François Roch may not be jewelers on Place Vendôme, yet they know these precious stones better than anyone else. Their revolutionary work paves the way for countless applications and has restored nobility to diamond imperfections, teaching us that the flaws in diamonds make them even more precious.
3. Event Concept:
The « Science Bubble Tea » is the flagship Franco-Taiwanese science event organised by the French Office in Taipei, where we gather the best French and Taïwanese scientific experts to debate science, technology and societal challenges. The Science bubble tea is not a classical scientific conference. It is a fun and open science event, with short talks in English, accessible to all but still packed with valuable insights – a perfect occasion to ask all your questions to renowned French and Taïwanese scientific experts and flow the discussions over a drink. This event welcomes everyone, whether you are expert in the field, a student or simply someone with a curious mind.
4. Our experts of the day :
Jean-François Roch is the director of Quantum Saclay, the interdisciplinary center of the University Paris-Saclay dedicated to the academic and industrial development of quantum technologies. He is a professor of physics at Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay, where he leads a research team focusing on the use of diamond point defects.
Together with Alain Aspect and Philippe Grangier, Jean-François Roch was part of the team that conducted the single-photon interference experiments for the observation of wave-particle duality, groundbreaking work that led the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to award Alain Aspect the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2022.
He is a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France and an Overseas Fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.
Huan-Cheng Chang (張煥正教授) is a distinguished professor at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences of the Academia Sinica. He earned his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Indiana University Bloomington, USA, in 1990.
For over three decades, he has been at the forefront of research intersecting physics, chemistry, and biology, aiming to develop new methods, tools, and technologies for addressing problems with wide-ranging applications.
In 2005, he pioneered the development of fluorescent nanodiamonds containing NV centers. In 2019, Huan-Cheng Chang and François Treussart (ENS Paris-Saclay) were awarded the prestigious Franco-Taiwanese research prize of the French Académie des Sciences, for their research on the use of the fluorescent nanodiamond crystals in neuronal imaging, enabling significant medical advancements.
