- The compliments from your American supervisor about your performance seems super positive, but is their "small suggestion" truly minor, or is it sugar-coated?
- Did the frankness of your Dutch colleague catch you off guard?
- When there are different opinions within the team, why does your French colleague initiate philosophical debates while you prefer to avoid conflict?
- In collaborative settings, do you find yourself constantly waiting for the right moment to speak, only to be perceived as silent and lacking ideas by others?
When it comes to different ways of working in cross-cultural teams, it's common to attribute to cultural differences. For example, Europeans and Americans tend to be more direct communicators, whereas Asians tend to send subtle messages that requires context and more interpretation. When we express these differences, we may inadvertently reinforce stereotypes or generalize too quickly.
Some may argue that discussing cultural differences is less effective than considering individuals' perspectives. While this viewpoint is legit, neglecting to acknowledge "culture" may lead us to unconsciously view others through the lens of our own culture, failing to recognize our biases and potentially making flawed judgments and decisions.
Working with people from different cultures without understanding, appreciating, and respecting "cultural differences" can lead to poor communication, misunderstandings, unnecessary conflicts, and even disasters.
Why Global Leaders Should Learn About Intercultural Communication
As the global economy continues to expand and develop, many companies aspire to enhance creativity and expand into global markets through more diverse teams. However, the concept of a "diverse organization" also presents challenges for businesses and leaders, with "cultural differences" being one of the most complex aspects.
If you are a leader exploring and learning in the international workplace or an entrepreneur collaborating globally, or even living and studying in different countries and seeking a more systematic approach to intercultural communication, we invite you to participate in the "Global Leaders Webinar." Explore how to communicate effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds and learn effective team collaboration and communication strategies to overcome potential challenges.
What You'll Learn:
In this webinar, we'll use Erin Meyer's research as a baseline and introduce you to 4 of the 8 dimensions in the book The Culture Map. Topics include:
- Establish the mindset for intercultural communication
- Explore The Culture Map dimensions: Communicating, Evaulating, Disagreeing and Leading
- Tips and strategies to communicate effectively based on these cultural differences
No culture is superior or inferior. What we need is to be mindful of our differences and exploring ways to collaborating with people with diverse backgrounds.
