Join us, as we connect with Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar speakers, who will share their experiences of Russian occupation and exile, as well as their people’s resistance both current and intergenerational.

Speaker 1: ALIM ALIEV A Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar journalist, human rights activist and researcher. Deputy Director of the Ukrainian Institute, co-founder of CrimeaSOS initiative and the Crimean House platform.

Speaker 2: KARIMA ROMANIV A Mandarin translator and former humanitarian volunteer, author of a soon-to-be-published diary about her perilous escape from Russian occupation in her native Kherson Region.

Moderator: JASON LIU A Taiwanese journalist who formerly reported from Ukraine, author of the book “War in Ukraine: I Fight Therefore I am”

Crimean Tatars are the Indigenous people of Crimea. Their struggle against Russian colonialism started centuries prior — they withstood the forceful deportation of 1944, ethnic cleansing and cultural erasure, and their motherland’s occupation in 2014. Yet, many Crimean Tatars emerged as powerful advocates for the liberation of Crimea and the de-occupation of Ukraine.

The full-scale invasion of 2022 has extended the experience of occupation to many more Ukrainians. They were faced with the choice: stay vulnerable to the Russians’ terror or abandon their homes and leave. Our second speaker will talk about the choice they made and the unimaginable challenge of its implementation.

It is impossible to understand the ongoing war without listening to Ukrainian voices directly. Thank you for hearing us!

This event will be bilingual with translation provided for Mandarin and English. Speakers’ sharing will be followed by a discussion — the audience is invited to participate!
