About:
A discussion about community art centers, including the relationship between art, community, politics and economics. With Patrick Wang, director of A Bread Factory Parts 1 & 2, and leaders of local community art centers in Taipei.
Wang describes A Bread Factory Parts 1 & 2 as "a pair of films that looks at the state of art, community and commerce in our lives. This is no small thing. Arguably, it is the soul of everything." Wang "trained and worked as an economist for many years. But I thought like an old world economist, those who were called worldly philosophers. They were as likely to write treatises on empathy as on trade; they saw all these strands crossing in the same social fabric. It is this complex social fabric that interests me." From this point we will start the discussion.
Patrick Wang
Patrick is an award winning Taiwanese-American independent filmmaker. He has helmed four feature films, including In the Family (2011), The Grief of Others (20155) and The Bread Factory Parts One and Two (2018).
Roma Mehta
Roma is originally from India. A graphic designer, an artist, and a committed community member, she has made Taiwan her home since 1987. She was one of the founding members of Connections, a community for expats in Taiwan, and is a core member of Red Room, a cultural arts space in Taipei dedicated to listening. She has also acted as an ambassador for India's Joy of Giving Week -- Daan Utsav, and is a dedicated volunteer for the non-for-profit group HandUp Congo.
Iris Hung
As managing director of Bamboo Curtain Studio, Iris works to bring together artists and environmental educators to see how they can affect change on larger environmental issues. These environmental art projects seek to deepen our awareness of our living environments.
Bamboo curtain uses creativity and arts to look at issues of sustainability and the environment. Its mission is to support creative talents by providing resources for artistic production, research, cultural exchange, and helping art projects to have a greater impact on society.
