Someone said that when we take a photograph, the moment immediately became the past.
I have some prints taken in the past. They had been left at home and never been used. There must be a reason why I didn’t use them. A while ago I decided to put them randomly near my place and retake photos of them. Then I attempted to eliminate the visible boundary between the existing prints and the background environment information by using digital tools. To do so it released the time sequence of my private memories that were recorded on the old prints.
A thing in a photograph is the thing that ever exists in front of the eyes and at the same time the absence of the substance, which can not be seen anymore. I wanted to get the images out of the “past”. These fragments in the processed images are beginning to from like new particles, dissolving equivalently from the background visual. The images once belonged to me before. However, they were set free after I processed them through tools like Photoshop. They started to move like freshly born cells. The images were reborn as accidental products and emerged beyond time and the physical content, which the author can not intervene either.
If the image itself connects the past and the present as a cumulatively lineal existence, I want to replace the circumstance with small particles and make it become all sort of “points”. Photographers usually choose what to show according to their personal wills. In this process, selection is effected randomly by the images themselves. I want the images to be relieved from my memories and to be recognized as just an image.
In the series, I explore how to “resuscitate” the image and try to acquire the “current” through my creation.
About the book
PLANET (2016)
When I was a child, I often wondered what was happening outside of the earth. However, I couldn't find any answer at all. I still remember sometimes I would have some weird feelings. Strange images would come to my mind, which I couldn't express in words.
People perceive, recognize and imagine. Although we can not always imagine things with certainty, I don’t think it is important to find answers. On the other hand, I noticed that this ability to feel must be "something" very fundamental existing in human souls.
In this project, I’ve defined a "fictional planet" where all the images were taken from multiple locations. I tried to catch the flow of circulation and time passing of this planet, in order to reproduce "something" on the paper.
