Gentrification: Three Case Studies
In this class, we will be discussing gentrification and its effects on the local economy, the local population and the livelihood of a neighborhood. Gentrification is often discussed as an abstract concept in mainstream media, what I want to talk about is the real life implications it has on cities and the people who live there. By talking about gentrification, we can uncover many social issues that accompany urban "development". There is no right or wrong answer to whether gentrification has a positive effect or not to a city's fabric, the changes it brings is open to discussion.

Class Introduction
Class #1
We will be discussing what gentrification is, and look at how San Fransisco changed over the course of 3 decades. Our discussions will be backed up by data such as rent prices and demographics of the area (which I'll be providing).
Class #2
We will talk about gentrification in developing countries. What Istanbul is going through is very similar to what Rio went through before the Olympics. We will have a light discussion about what kinds of effects it has on the local population.
Class #3
We will talk about Taipei, the city most of the students are the most familiar with. Students will be asked their opinion on how their city has transformed (in both positive and negative ways.)
