Relationship Psychology
Relationship Psychology class will look at three important types of relationships, peer relationships, romantic relationships and parent-child relationships. Some theory and research from psychology will be discussed. We will answer questions such as: What factors determine who we become friends with? How do men and women differ in what they look for in a partner? How do our relationships with our parents shape our future relationships? Students are invited to share some personal experiences if they feel comfortable doing so, but are not obliged to do so.
Focus
Psychology, empathy and English for human relationships.

Class Introduction
Class 1: Peer Relationships
In the first class we will discuss peer relationships. Each student will be given a reading before class begins on one of the factors involved in determining friendship. Students will sum up the factors and we will then discuss each factor as a class. We will also go on to discuss how peers affect our habits and behaviour.
Class 2: Romantic Relatioships
We will look at the psychology of romantic relationships, including a discussion of the most desirable traits for both men and women as well some strategies for maintaining a healthy relationship according to psychologists. Some reading will be assigned to students before the class.
Class 3: Child Relationships
We will discuss some of the psychological literature relating to parent-child relationships. We will talk about some Freudian psychology which, though largely debunked by modern psychologists, still has a large impact on the fields of psychology and psychoanalysis, as well as on culture in general. We will also look at Bowlby’s attachment theory.
