For event details in English, please scroll down.

Pei-Hsuan Wang http://pei-hsuanwang.com/

Concrete Flux is a multi-media, multi-disciplinary journal which takes as its subject matter China's hyper-fast emerging urban spaces, their meaning and one's everyday experiences of them.

For this event, we will give a brief overview of Concrete Flux, our previous issues and events, and plans for the future. In the second half, Taiwanese artists Pei-Hsuan Wang and I-Hsuen Chen will each present a work that fits within the themes investigated by Concrete Flux.

Chen’s ‘Still-Life Analysis II: The Island’ explores ad hoc living spaces made by the homeless living under Civic Boulevard in Taipei. Wang’s project looks at migrant communities in Taipei, specifically domestic helpers and caretakers from Indonesia. Their works deal explicitly with the process of creating informal spaces within the city’s existing physical and social structures. While both Chen and Wang explore Taipei-specific ‘outsider’ communities, their works also draw our attention to universal issues.

░░ About Concrete Flux

Concrete Flux was founded in 2013 in Beijing, China with the following mission:

Concrete Flux is a multi-media, multi-disciplinary journal which takes as its subject matter China's hyper-fast emerging urban spaces, their meaning and one's everyday experiences of them. We believe that a new configuration of space through urbanisation will lead to a new configuration of society. Our aim, then, is to contribute to some understanding of or gain insight into what these spaces, which seem to emerge faster than our minds can log and assess, may mean.

The possibilities of these new modes of thinking will be further pushed in discussion groups to be held both online, through our newsletter, and through events. We also hope that these discussions will offer new ideas and possibilities for new collaborations amongst artists, designers, writers, photographers etc. with an interest in Chinese urban spaces.

Concrete Flux is designed more as a facilitator of and platform for projects than as a project in and of itself.

Concrete Flux became a collective in 2014 in order to gain access to a wider audience. Since 2013, Concrete Flux has published four issues and facilitated events. Its contributors are internationally active artists, writers, photographers, academics, designers, etc., with an overarching interest in architecture, urban ecology, and urban experience in China. Concrete Flux is a platform for and facilitator of conversation and collaboration, branching out to organize art events, workshops and panels. As we move forward, we plan to broaden Concrete Flux’s approach by focusing on partnerships and extending our conversation to cities everywhere.

We hope that by using Concrete Flux as a platform for presenting important and relevant work that we will create awareness around urban issues that, while universally experienced, are often overlooked. We aim to find new ways to facilitate and support projects, so we hope that those who are interested in Concrete Flux will contact us about collaborations. Finally, in a world where we increasingly rely on technology for interaction, we aim to promote in-person communication, sharing of information and transmission of ideas.
