Paul來自英國的Essex，他擁有英國名校巴斯大學的博士學位，專長是歷史與文化，這堂課Paul要透過旅行、歷史與藝術三個角度來介紹倫敦文化，Paul希望大家不但能夠練習到英文口說，也能更了解倫敦、英國乃至整個歐洲，Paul說這堂課程就是一趟旅行，他會帶領大家更深刻地認識他的家鄉。請見Paul的介紹：
London is one of the world’s major cities, and one of the most influential. Its history reflects the UK’s history. As home to Royalty and the site of Government, it saw the beginning of the UK and was the centre of one of the world’s greatest empires. We’ll be looking at the classic, ‘tourist’ London, as well as more deeply into its history and culture to explore its connections with Britain, Europe and the world. This class is an invitation to go on a journey, and also to explore London’s own journey.
Class Introduction 課程介紹
CLASS#1 Traveling in London
We’ll start the journey with a look at the things that make a tourist’s trip to London. London has had a long and varied history, and its buildings show some of this. There are the black cabs and red buses, of course, and the Underground – the Tube. Big Ben, the Tower of London. A tourist’s guide to iconic London, the kind of think people think about when they think of London and the stories behind them. Share your experiences of London, or just find out more about this city!
CLASS#2 Geography, history and politics
Where it’s come from and where it’s going. London has a new mayor, and the international press made much of the fact that he’s a Muslim. But that wasn’t important for the UK press. Why? What’s London’s relationship to the rest of the UK and Europe? What are the challenges that London faces as a multi-lingual, multi-ethnic, world city? In this class, we’ll be looking at some of these things.
CLASS#3 London in the Imagination: art, writing and music
From Wordsworth and Dickens to Adele, how is the London of the BBC’s modern Sherlock different from the original Sherlock Holmes? In this class, we’ll explore the London as how others have imagined London to be. We’ll look at how London has been used in books and films.
