Showcase of Arts Talents at JCCAC Festival 2014 “New Generation”

Mention “the new generation” and what comes to mind? Probably the motivation, ambition, innovation and commitment of the younger generation. While sometimes viewpoints of the younger and older generations may differ, there will always be shared interests which from a wider perspective, allowing people to put aside their personal agenda and achieve altruistic goals, bridging the gap between different people and generations in the society through common dreams and values.

The opening ceremony of JCCAC Festival 2014 will be held at 7pm on 5 December at the Central Courtyard of Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC). The theme of JCCAC Festival this year is “New Generation”. The title echoes the theme of the feature exhibition in the Galleries “XinYiDai – An International University Students Exchange Exhibition”, a partnership project with a JCCAC resident arts organisation. This is the first time of such a scale of collaboration during JCCAC Festival, and a lot of happy, positive synergy is expected. JCCAC also hopes that the chosen theme this year will inspire other resident artists and art organisations to interpret it imaginatively through their independently curated exhibitions and activities, creating an exciting collective vibe during the Festival and beyond. The month-long Festival features the works of 30 participating resident artists/art organisations from over 20 studios. There are more than 40 free programmes to encourage public participation, covering a wide array of visual arts media (including prints, sketch drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, glass, design, etc.) and performing arts (including music nights, open air film screenings, multi-media art demonstrations, etc.). They present a wide range of focus and expression, from abstract to documentary, from issues of personal feelings to social awareness, from lifestyle aspirations to pursuit of faith and aesthetics, lending depth and profoundness to the artists’ interpretations on the “New Generation” theme.

The exhibitions provide glimpses into the lives, views and values of the younger generation; each artwork is like a mirror which reflects their inner voices. The feature exhibition “XinYiDai – An International University Students Exchange Exhibition” showcases 150 works of print, animated print and book art created by budding artists from around the world. The exhibition by artist C.K. Yung presents robots he has created by using stage and sculptural techniques to explore the nature of human beings and the introspective relationship between the body (hardware) and the mind (software), reflecting ourselves and the material world from different angles, and to express the complexity of human nature and the multiple levels of aesthetics. There are other interesting exhibitions and activities organised by JCCAC resident artists/art groups including Emily Lee, Gavin Au, Carmen Ng, Clarie Ko, Chan Nga Sze, Fourniture, BEIS Leather Workshop and Design Port, etc.

As part of the local community, JCCAC resident artists are particularly aware of social issues related to the younger generation. The documentary exhibition presented by the artist-cum-curator Andrew Lam on a topical social issue provides an open platform for the public to ponder on the recent “Umbrella Movement” and the relationship between the individual and the city that we call home. Another interesting exhibition is the photo exhibition “Do You Read Me?” co-presented by the photographer-cum-curator Ducky Tse and Oxfam, which spotlights the plights of ethnic minority children in Hong Kong whose prospects in society is limited by the hindrance they experience in learning to write Chinese, but who nonetheless dare to dream and strive for self-reliance. There is also a joint exhibition co-presented by Our Shek Kip Mei Creative Art Centre and 4 NGOs to showcase folk art and the tradition of people in the community.

During the Festival, many free arts programmes are suitable for group participation by young people. By popular demand, there will be a rerun of the free group drawing programmes organised by artist John McArthur over the weekend of 13 and 14 December. The programme on Saturday will incorporate a special performance by the band "The Privateers", promising an evening of music, pirates, drawing and lots of fun for the family. For those interested in developing a career in the creative industry, do no miss the arts talks (conducted in Cantonese) on visual communication design and modern arts organised by Hong Kong Art & Design Community.

Many more interesting and absolutely free programmes await your discovery during the JCCAC Festival!
