活動簡介

[Updated on 10/1] Following the recent announcement from the Taipei Government regarding school and office closures on October 2nd due to Typhoon Krathon, we wanted to update you on the status of the Berkeley Dialogue event. After careful consideration, we’ve decided to proceed with the event as planned, as this is a rare and special opportunity to meet our distinguished guests in Taipei. However, we completely understand if you prefer to cancel due to the weather. If you have registered and decide to cancel, please contact us at club@berkeleytaiwan.org.

You are invited to a special event Berkeley Dialogue 2024: Pioneering Sustainability - AI and ESG in the Age of Innovation. Join us for an evening with 3 distinguished speakers from CAL: Professor Omar Yaghi, Dean Jennifer Chayes, and Dean Michael Lu.

Professor Omar Yaghi, the recent recipient of the prestigious Tang Prize for Sustainable Development, is acclaimed for his pioneering work in reticular chemistry. His innovative discoveries have become vital tools in the fight against climate change, establishing him as a global leader in sustainability research.
Dean Jennifer Chayes, the inaugural dean of UC Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS)—the first new college at Berkeley in over 50 years—is a renowned expert in artificial intelligence, data science, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices. Her work focuses on how these fields intersect to address critical global challenges, promoting sustainable and responsible innovation. Dean Michael Lu is the dean of the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley. During his tenure, he transformed key federal programs in maternal and child health, and launched major initiatives to reduce maternal, infant, and child mortality across the nation.

Together, Professor Yaghi, Dean Chayes, and Dean Lu will explore the powerful intersection of sustainability, artificial intelligence, public health and the future of ESG practices.

We look forward to welcoming you to this insightful and engaging event.

About Professor Omar M. Yaghi

Omar Yaghi | College of Chemistry

Omar M. Yaghi is the James and Neeltje Tretter Chair Professor of Chemistry at UC Berkeley and a Senior Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is also the Founding Director of the Berkeley Global Science Institute and Co-Director of the Kavli Energy NanoScience Institute.

Professor Yaghi is renowned for pioneering the field of reticular chemistry, specifically the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs). These materials, known for their exceptional porosity, have wide applications in clean energy storage, carbon capture, and water harvesting. His groundbreaking work has earned him numerous awards, including the Tang Prize for Sustainable Development, the Albert Einstein World Award of Science, and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. He is among the top five most highly cited chemists worldwide.

About Dean Jennifer Chayes

Jennifer Chayes | CDSS at UC Berkeley

Jennifer Tour Chayes is Dean of the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society at UC Berkeley. Jennifer led the establishment of this college – the first new college at Berkeley in more than 50 years. She is also Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, Information, Mathematics, and Statistics. Before joining Berkeley in 2020, Jennifer was Technical Fellow at Microsoft, where she led research programs for more than 20 years and was founder and managing director of three interdisciplinary labs: Microsoft Research New England, New York City, and Montreal. These labs were focused on core computing and AI and the interface of computing with many other fields, including mathematics, physics, biomedicine, economics, and social sciences. Before joining Microsoft, she was Professor of Mathematics at UCLA.

Jennifer is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and received the 2015 John von Neumann Prize from the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. She has authored more than 150 scientific papers in mathematics, physics, computer science, economics, biology, and chemistry and is the co-inventor of 30 patents. She earned her Ph.D. in mathematical physics at Princeton University and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Jennifer’s research areas include phase transitions in computer science and structural and dynamical properties of networks, including modeling and graph algorithms. She is one of the inventors of the field of graphons, which are widely used for machine learning of large-scale networks. Her recent work focuses on machine learning, including both theory and applications in cancer immunotherapy, ethical decision-making, and climate change. Most recently, she has been focusing on the use of generative AI in the creation of materials for carbon capture.

About Dean Michael Lu

Michael Lu

Dr. Michael C. Lu (呂淳祺) is the dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to coming to Berkeley, Lu served as director of the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau under the Obama Administration. During his tenure, he transformed key federal programs in maternal and child health, and launched major initiatives to reduce maternal, infant, and child mortality across the nation. Notably, Dr. Lu is the first Taiwanese Dean of Public Health in the United States. For his leadership, he was awarded the prestigious U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Hubert H. Humphrey Service to America Award in 2013.

Prior to his public service, Lu was a professor of obstetrics-gynecology and public health at UCLA, where his research focused on racial-ethnic disparities in birth outcomes from a life-course perspective. He co-directed the residency program in obstetrics and gynecology and a training grant in maternal and child health, and received several prestigious awards for his teaching. As a practicing obstetrician for nearly two decades, he has attended more than 1000 births, and has been voted one of the Best Doctors in America since 2005.
