Recycling crafts with wastes workshops

"Taiwan's traditional craft gradually decline, transition or even disappear during the development of science and technology progress, but will not disappear the value it once created. It represents Taiwan's early OEM, simple life style, these cultures are worthy of us to understand, to learn. Bring it on! Along with the lecturer's footsteps, through the concept of circular economy and design, given the Taiwan traditional craft new style and new elements."

"Are you concerned about environmental issues? Do you have a good recycle habit? Do you think recycling is the most direct environmental protection as it? There is such a new concept is gradually in the development, and lead to industrial change, circular economy, a different from the previous thinking and practice, by the overall industrial structure at all levels to improve product recycle and reproduction, and this time we will let you participate in such a design concept."

If the description above has been felt to be touched or have a similar feeling, it is very suitable to participate!

In fact, the circular and social design is gradually growing around us.

In the new wave of circular economy-driven industrial change, Taiwan and the rest of the world face new challenges and opportunities, as with the flow of goods, but no longer the linear economy (take-Make-use-dispose) that is thinking and practice, but in the case of the gradual depletion of the Earth's resources, how to reduce the exploitation of natural minerals, improve the use of product recycling and reproduction, the construction of a new type of international industrial cooperation model to promote the flow of goods in a sustainable cycle. This trend reveals that the industry needs to make significant changes not only in terms of the concept, but also in the overall structure of a material, process, design, and marketing, and service. In this change, the designer plays a very critical role. Designers are no longer creators who just the passive use of existing materials and are actively involved in the development of new materials research also actively engaged in the construction of industrial recycling system. The future through the designer and the industry closely linked and cooperation in order to create the new value of this era, to achieve economic, social and ecological balance and development.

And this workshop we will invite Alei Verspoor who will integrate the "modern", "traditional craft", "circular economy" elements, and through your own materials and the target finished product with the implementation process, hope to bring participants a different experience.

How is it run?

Activity time is: 10/1 10:30 ~ 15:30

HOMEWORK|
1. bring one piece of traditional craft. (or a photo of it, but preferably the real thing) this can be a vase, a bamboo basket, a piece of woodwork, a piece of textile. any material, technique and size is ok, as long as it is a  traditional Taiwanese craft. ! dont worry, it will not get damaged in the workshop.
2. bring waste materials (things that you would normally put in the trash, or that you find in the trash), such as plastic bags, chopsticks, old newspaper, or bigger things)

Lecture|We will start with a short presentation about the Modern Craft Project that Alei Verspoor exhibits at Taiwan Design expo.

Practice|Then we will do exercises to practice “out-of-the-box” thinking. Then we will work in groups of 2 students to design and create MODERN designs inspired by a traditional CRAFT piece. We will create prototypes using waste materials.

What can you gain from this workshop?

>A meaningful and unique work with your own hand

> For the circular economy and traditional craft in Taiwan has a different point of view.

> An unforgettable creative experience
